The three phases of stress

Stress indicates the body's response to one or more stress factors, otherwise known as stressors. This response is both biological (hormone secretion, for ex) and psychological (survival tactics). The goal is for the body to adapt to these stressors.

When stress occurs, your body will adapt itself physically by mobilizing all of its organs (muscles, heart, lungs, brain, hormones...) Three stages can follow :

1. the alarm stage :

This is where your body defends itself against a stressor. It produces adrenaline, one of the stress hormones that responds immediately; it is responsible for your state of alertness, fear, anger, and brings energy to the brain and muscles.

If the stress factor persists long enough, you enter into...

2. ... the resistance stage :

This is where your body is in a constant state of tension and must adapt. It resists the situation thanks to the adrenal gland's secretion of adrenaline and cortisol (the other stress hormone that optimizes cerebral and muscular functions). If the state of stress continues, an excess production of hormones will consume your body's energy and will lead you to ...

3. ... the exhaustion stage :

This is when the body has resisted so much that it has no strength left to adapt and face the stress.

In order to face stressful situations, psychological factors come into play. Your personality, heredity, past experiences, environment, and lifestyle all determine the way you react to stress and your capacity to deal with it.

If you are able to control the situation and cope without exhausting yourself, stress will leave very few or no traces. On the other hand, if the situation overwhelms you, stress will take over ; it first manifests with a host of symptoms such as trouble sleeping and concentrating, followed by consequent troubles such as depression, high blood pressure....
